How to Help Someone with Fibromyalgia

I think that having a friend or family member with fibromyalgia would be almost as difficult as actually having fibromyalgia. I’m lucky enough to have very encouraging family and friends who would help me in any way possible. It would just be so frustrating to see someone who is sick and not be able to help them. Here are two things I can think of that would really help most fibromites:

Be educated. It doesn’t help if you tell someone that their disease doesn’t exist or they need to focus in on some obscure cure. This is one of the most stressful parts of having fibromyalgia. Not only does the sufferer have to combat the disease they also have to deal with all the misconceptions surrounding the disease. Go with what medical professionals say instead of something your neighbor told you.

Be encouraging. Fibromyalgia can be a very discouraging disease. It’s frustrating to constantly be met with all the things you can’t do. They’ll feel more human and accomplished when they get something marked off their list. They might just have to send out communion invitations instead of throwing a big party. Help your favorite fibromite prioritize and downsize their goals. Remind them of the things they have accomplished so they don’t feel helpless.

How could your family and friends help you?

Yes, in addition to the physical challenges related to fibromyalgia, there is also the fact that the medical community is not at all sure the disease is a disease at all, since there are no consistent symptoms nor causalities that can be isolated using scientific tests.

Like many other conditions, fibromyalgia is suspected to be intimately linked to the nervous system, although there again, no definite causalities have as yet been isolated.

So, until there is more definitive medical help available, we will have to muddle through the best we can.

Thank you for recognizing how helpless someone with this condition might feel. To the sufferer, the pain is very real.
