How long should a laptop last?

I know about as much about computers as I do about DNA testing. (That means I don’t know a lot about computers.) Since I work from home a good computer is the most important tool. I’ve been noticing lately that the screen on my laptop occasionally blinks. It’s not a huge problem. I have an HP laptop that is about two years old. I was hoping to hold onto it for a few more years. Admittedly I work a lot which means I use my laptop a ton. It still works pretty well but if I need to replace it I’d rather do it when all of the big back to school sales are going on. So I just want some opinions, how long should a laptop last?

    I went to an International genomics day today at the University of Warwick, UK. Its still as clear as mud to me.

    This is a great netbook. Almost the perfect combination. Only the bigger capacity battery would have been better, but there are models with half the battery life of this one.
    As it is not sold in Europe, I had to import. No problems with shipping and I even bought an extended international warranty a couple of weeks later.
