Does the secret work?

Last year, I did an experiment to see if the Secret really works. I didn’t read the book because I was trying to swap for it for free. Instead I just watched the movie & did my best. I had several goals in mind, one of which was a new living room set for my mom. My family has done so much for me that I really wanted to replace the old, uncomfortable, outdated living room set. I did this experiment in July. I didn’t get a new living room set & so I thought it had failed. I didn’t start dating Luke from Gilmore Girls. I didn’t make a million dollars. I didn’t get a new house.

I’m sitting on a new couch which I bought back in November because my car insurance was a lot less than I thought it would be. We had been looking for a new couch for about four years & it was especially difficult because with fibromyalgia there have only been 2-3 couches that I’ve found comfortable in my entire lifetime. Plus, we just hadn’t seen a style that worked. One day the furniture store was having a sale so we woke up early to check it out. There were several things that we could afford, but nothing that we liked. Everything seemed to be microsuede which was soft but it always shows fingerprints & I really don’t want to have to brush the furniture.

The salesman offered to take us to the warehouse & we resisted because we’d literally seen every couch that has been manufactured in the last four years. We asked him to tell us the price of a leather chair we had seen several years ago. It worked out that we’d be able to buy exactly one chair, which would leave us with our very uncomfortable, ugly, blue couch & a new red chair. This seemed worse than not having new furniture at all. It was discouraging but we decided to go look at the warehouse. We found a microsuede sofa that looked like leather (so it didn’t show fingerprints). I looked at the price tag & thought, is that all? My mom & I just looked at each other because we didn’t know what to do, we were so used to hating every sofa we sat on. This one was very comfortable. We were able to afford a sofa & two matching chairs for the price of the leather chair. I didn’t think of the Secret at the time. It wasn’t the living room set I had put on my dream board. It happened in such an ordinary way, & took up all the money I had set aside for the occasion. The living room set is a medium brown instead of a chocolate brown. It didn’t come with the flat screen TV or new end tables that were on my dream board. I guess I was expecting that I’d be able to say a magic word like Orovo & it would automatically appear for free. So what do you think? Was it the secret?

[...] I was on the fence about the book/movie/phenomenon The Secret. I just reread the book & I’m still conflicted about it. On one hand, it motivates me. It gives me hope & a sense of power over my life. I even think it’s effective. Granted, when I tried to follow The Secret my stocks fell drastically, & I didn’t get a new house, Branson lots, or meet a guy like Luke from Gilmore Girls. I did seem to manifest a new living room set. [...]

Well more than the secret I think it’s a matter of will power and confidence a person has. Above the writer says about how they purchased a furniture set. It was just a matter of luck as they went to the warehouse and bought the sofa. The book may have some motivating factors and things, but again i would stress that it’s upto the individual.
