The Perfect Workout: Fun

I’ve always heard that if you want to be able to really stick to a workout regime, it’s imperative that it be fun. I’ve always thought that fun exercise sounds like an oxymoron. If exercise was fun it wouldn’t be called exercise, it would be called fun. We wouldn’t need the thousands of dollars spent on gym equipment. Usually, I am counting the minutes I have left until my workout is over & it takes me several hours to talk myself into working out.

It’s definitely difficult to keep up the motivation during the holidays. I knew that Valentine’s day was coming up, so I wanted to celebrate by not working out. I wanted to spend my time with Amazon coupons buying presents for myself. I knew that if I got off track, I wouldn’t be able to get back on. Soon one day not working out would turn into two or three.

So I decided to change things up a bit. Instead of doing pilates or tae bo, I went outside. I decided to go sledding since we live on the side of a mountain it’s more like extreme sledding. Plus, it meant that I would have to walk back up the hill several times. It was definitely a good work out & it tricked me into thinking that exercise is fun.

  1. I’m afraid fun and sledding became two very distinct entities for me last time I tried to combine them. After managing to wrap myself around a tree, I’d just got that expression on my face that children get when they know that a large amount of sensory pain is steaming-rolling towards their brain - the sort of expression that looks like you’re deciding whether or not to cry.

At this exact moment an 8 year old kid came over to check that I was ok - I felt sooooo dumb and pathetic
