And the office laughs with you
There’s a saying that goes something like “laugh at yourself & the whole world laughs with you”. It’s difficult trying to show your personality at work, without being offensive. If you can laugh at yourself, you can get ahead.
This is probably the most acceptable type of workplace humor. This way you can still use humor, but you aren’t at risk of hurting anyone’s feelings. If you accidentally wear mismatched socks to work, own it, instead of being embarrassed by it. It’s even great to deal with mistakes in your work that you might have made. Just a few words of caution.
1. Don’t go overboard with this. You don’t want to be known as the person with low self esteem, that won’t help you get promotions.
2. Be sure that you can handle your own sense of humor. It’s likely that if you give yourself a funny nickname, no one will disagree with you & it will spread throughout your workplace. If you make fun of yourself, other people will too. This can endear you to them. No one wants the “mismatched socks guy” to lose his job, just be ready for the teasing. Other people are looking for ways to have personality at work & they will use this as a way to achieve that.
