I am a 26 year old princess with fibromyalgia. I am trying to manage my disease, find a job that I can do from home, & retain my general awesome-ness.

Can your blog come back to haunt you?

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

I’m not talking about in the afterlife. I’m thinking about if I ever need to interview for jobs again. I recently read about a student who was denied her teaching certificate right before graduation because she had a picture of herself drinking on her myspace profile. Then I read this article about how one in five employers finds information on the Internet about their candidates on the web. I don’t have anything to hide, any prospective employers would just see my overuse of the phrase “wicked awesome”, but maybe even that can come back to haunt me. It has got me thinking about always appearing professional online. If anyone asks, my interests include, working smarter not harder, & my worst habit is that I just care too much.

Security

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

A generation ago, security meant locking the doors when you left the house, or putting the jewelry in the freezer where thieves wouldn’t think to look or putting your valuables in a safe, using a lock on your bike. Then came electronic security systems in homes. Then came the super information highway which brought the need for security to a whole new level. Now we suddenly all had passwords to a million different things that we had to protect but still be able to remember. We have to worry about who views our emails. It seems like nothing is secure anymore, & more & more information about ourselves & our businesses is out there.

For our generation security means protecting emails, passwords, medical records, & bank statements. We can’t just put all of these things in the freezer.

It’s good to be a girl

Most of the blogs I read are written by blogging chicks. I like the idea because these blogs are written by women who are comfortable being women, & generally good with who they are. I figure if all the cool kids are doing it, I should too. (Whenever I said that my mom said, if all the cool kids jumped off a bridge would you too? I think it’s because she’s a mom & has to meet some sort of quota on that particular phrase. If all the cool kids jumped off a bridge would I? Probably not. However, in all my years of observation of cool kids, I have never seen one jump off a bridge. They do always go to the good concerts though. Don’t underestimate the cool kids).
