When I was a kid I really wanted to be in the WNBA, the WNBA was just starting out. I’d spend hours in the Spring outside with our basketball standard, dreaming. Luckily, we had cool in-ground basketball equipment, that was really durable & adjustable. It went from 5 feet, all the way up to 10 feet, so the whole family could use it. It was definitely worth the investment because we got hundreds of hours of use out of it, & lots of family time. It kept my brothers & I from fighting.
When the standard was at 5 feet, I felt tall & unstoppable. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories. Mostly because it was one of the few activities that the whole family could enjoy together. It was probably the only game that I could play with all of my brothers & I even stood a chance when we were playing H-O-R-S-E. Games like these even helped me learn to spell Mississippi, which was a longer version of H-O-R-S-E. We were still all members of the TV generation, but the basketball standard got us outside & getting exercise, without knowing that we were doing something good for ourselves, we were just having fun. I obviously never made it to the WNBA, but playing H-O-R-S-E still doesn’t feel like exercise.
