Sugarless Recap
With most of the other experiments, I have been looking forward to the end. It’s a been a month of trying to cut back on my sugar intake. I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, but I still ate sugar, what can I expect? I lost 4 lbs, which doesn’t seem like a lot, until I pick up 4 lbs. of butter & I can’t carry it easily. I still want to lose 10-15 lbs. so I’m going to keep going with this experiment. More than anything, it makes me feel like I am doing something, because it is so hard to lose weight with fibromyalgia. Only eating refined sugar once or twice a month is something I can maintain for the rest of my life without too much trouble, so I think it is a good plan. It will be interesting to see how much I lose over time. I just need to keep doing something so I don’t keep gaining weight & I hope this is a good solution.

Hey,
I don’t know where to post this as all here is interesting. I am a RN and a Scientist. Before commenting on the sugar, let me say…
I have been telling my male patients to take two Brazil nuts a day. The reason is they contain 100 mcg of Selenium each. This is an essential for prostate health.
I typically told women that it would not benefit them the same, well, because of the fact they don’t have a prostate. Then I went to work in the Burn Unit. There we also gave Selenium at the same 200 mcg per day to anyone with a burn.
Recently in researching something else, I was challenged as to why it works. I thought “essential element.” However why essential?
I have only started my research on this but what I am finding is interesting. No, it is mind boggling that it is so simple. Just to make sure it was not something I missed in nursing school, I went back and it was not only not discussed, it was not even understood back then.
So you know what I do, I started a few hospital doctors (at a few hospitals) to prescribe gum chewing to decrease post op illius (not my idea, it came from a Chinese study).
I also got some Cancer Docs to start prescribing peanut butter and black strap molasses to increase the effectiveness of Procrit and avoid Blood transfusions in cancer patients. This in the patients who have no appetite.
The transfusions have been shown to increase the risk of metastasis of the cancer. (This also not my idea, I overheard the iron part from an 80 year old doc and figured the Peanut butter had the protein from the label. Antidotal experience demonstrated that it works.)
As a matter of fact, none of the over 600 bloodless (treated with out blood transfusions) patients who I have been case manager of have ever died even though the lowest count amounted to 85% blood loss.
Anyway, any study on increasing blood count or preventing anemia interests me. Then I came across several studies that indicate there is a connection with protecting blood and for that matter, all your cells. This is what I am currently studying.
Your benefit from the Brazil nuts may take a month and may only be minimal. However, I am trying to put a list of the foods together. I also believe there are some foods to avoid.
Sugar and chocolate are not on the list…so far. However a word of caution…if you have PMS or migraine headaches, chocolate may increase the symptoms.
If you would not mind, please contact me through my Speechmastery.com site and if you also would not mind, I would like to know any good resources you may have with great information.
Thanks,
Steeleyjon, RN

Thanks for the comment on my RHF wish. You are so sweet. I admire you for being able to cut out sugar. I have tried and failed so many times. I am addicted to Dr Pepper, unfortunately. I have cut out supper, though. I’ve lost 16 pounds so far. But I can’t cheat, at all. Ugh, this sucks. :>

I swear refined sugar is the most addictive (and lethal) substance we put in our bodies!
Congrats on kicking a REALLY bad habit. Unfortunately, there needs to be a 12 step program to help.

I would like to know if cutting out refined sugar from your diet lowered you pain level at all. Untill I hear that it does from many people- I don’t think I can take the big step of being sugar free.
Sounds like you did this a year ago – still mostly sugarfree?

I have cut back a great deal on my sugar intake, I can’t give it up all together
But I have noticed that in general I feel better when I eat less sugar. I cannot consume any of those artificial sweeteners as they really make me sick. Do those affect you too? I am curious, as I have found a lot of fibro folk do react. And plus they are “artificial” so I guess putting something into out bodies that is not natural would not be a good thing.
Have you tried D-Ribose supplements? I have read that it helps with reducing pain and increasing energy in fibro folk, but I have yet to try it. It is basically a sugar supplement. In fact, when they did experiments on it to see how it helps fibros, they couldn’t come to any exact conclusions, since the “placebo” group was taking a sugar pill, which was similar to the ribose! So everyone was taking sugar and everyone felt better
Funny.
Anyhoo I enjoyed reading your experiment. Thanks for sharing!
