The new job hunt

I remember diligently working on my resume when I had to apply for jobs.  This was before I started my own business.  I had to make things like "babysitter" sound like "intense leadership skills in stressful situations".  Then I put it in a pretty Word template & had my brother who was a job counselor look it over.  The first thing he said was, "No templates!".  I never would’ve known this because it was pretty, & why would word have it, if it’s bad for me?  In an age where there are horror stories of companies just picking up a handful or resume’s without reading through them all, it’s important that your resume stand out to at least give you a chance.

I also learned that some employers now use tracking systems & pick resumes loaded by keywords.  This completely changes the idea of how resumes should be made.  It’s basically resume roulette.  So, write a resume, a lot like you would an article on your blog.  Find out what your keywords are by looking through job descriptions & reading through the newspaper. I really wish that employers would look at the actual qualifications.  However, if you take the time to do all this, then I guess you deserve having your resume read.
