Day 11: Google Adsense
Adsense is Google’s way of monetizing your site through searches or pay per clicks. If you haven’t signed up for Google adsense already there is a link in my sidebar. Some tips to maximize your adsense earnings are:
1. Don’t click on your own ads, even just once will hurt. Also don’t ask friends or family to, Google tracks these sort of thing, and this might get you kicked out without warning.
2. Have a niche site. This helps Google serve you relevant content. For instance, my jewelry site gets jewelry ads, which is good because my visitors are looking for jewelry. If I was getting rare iguana ads on my jewelry site, I wouldn’t get very many clicks.
3. Don’t be shy. I was afraid that ads would make my site look cheap, so I hide them at the bottom of my page. I should’ve realized that if no one can see them I’m not going to make a lot of money. I realized that these ads can be unobtrusive and even aesthetically pleasing.4. Blend. Adsense is like wearing makeup, you don’t want to see that orange line along your jaw that separates your skin and foundation. Experiment with different colors and sizes.
5. Setup Adsense filters to track which types of ads are working best for you.
6. Carefully read Google’s terms of service. I know, I usually skip reading them too, but it’s important that you follow the rules as closely as possible. If you are running a wordpress blog, I use this plug-in that manages my adsense.
7. Remember it’s not all about the ad’s. First and foremost is your site having content that people like or need, without that, the ad’s are useless.
